lol’ing, whut iz it?
The art and science of Laugh out Loud is connected to humor, elitist speech (particularly in textual messages used by computer users), and is more formally known as initialism. See the Wikipedia entry on LOL for more information.
Lol’ing is more particularly referenced by speech patterns on such sites as 4chan, Icanhazcheeseburger, lolcats, and the evidence of actual grammar and syntax. For more information on grammar and kitty pidgin see Anil Dash.
In practice, grammar, spelling and all the other ways to deal with making up captions for interesting pictures, are largely irrelevant. Lol’ing is merely a way to make amusing comments about subjects that are either inherently funny, such as cats, or completely not funny ones such as politicians.
A picture of Baffle, Dmitry Gudkov’s rescue kitten of infinite amusement, with a caption of “I has mad skillz” is funny even without the picture, if one has been exposed to the lol meme. Similarly, a picture of US President GW Bush, with newly engaged daughter Jenna can be enhanced by adding a caption overlay to the picture. “O Hai, U clean and Sobr?” is a satirical comment on both the daughter’s “party habits”, and the President’s former drinking problems.
A large number of sites are propagating the lol meme, and one should explore at least a couple before beginning to attempt to add captions. Most people disregard this advice, but still just because you personally are smarter than a cat doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t at least read a little before attempting to lol things.
